Harmony House - Capstone

Harmony House is a thoughtfully designed sanctuary and community hub in Preston, dedicated to reducing social isolation and empowering women through connection, collaboration, education, and respite. With a trauma-informed approach, it prioritizes safety, comfort, and healing, creating a supportive environment for all women, including those who have experienced domestic violence.

The design fosters belonging and empowerment through informal networks, offering a judgment-free space where women can access support without barriers. The concept emphasizes a seamless connection with the surrounding environment and the journey through its carefully curated spaces, encouraging both social interaction and personal retreat.

The ground and middle levels feature vibrant social amenities, including a café, gym studios, education rooms, interactive lounges, and art therapy spaces, all designed to invite community engagement. In contrast, the upper levels offer private areas such as a library, study spaces, a movie room, and places of respite, providing opportunities for quiet contemplation. Outdoor balconies on each level connect users with nature, while biophilic elements—natural materials, indoor plants, and soothing colors—promote relaxation and emotional well-being.

Harmony House’s vision is realised through collaboration with local councils, community members, and support services, offering workshops, in-house counseling, social workers, and legal aid. This holistic approach ensures Harmony House is more than a refuge.
