A Second Chance….
The Second Chance Project tasked us with designing temporary shelters for Melbourne’s rough sleepers within some of the city’s iconic
buildings, including the historic Intercontinental Hotel on Collins Street. Once known as The Rialto and The Winfield, the hotel was
repurposed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for at-risk and homeless families. The design incorporated sleeping pods, a
reception and services area, mailboxes, and locker spaces. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant colours of Melbourne, particularly the
Swan St and Enterprise Park bridges, the sleeping pods featured coloured acrylic skylights that reflected a soft glow inside, with pinatex
coloured doors making the pods distinguishable for children. Set against the contrast of spotted gum timber and cross-laminated
timber, the design balanced playful vibrancy with a de-institutionalised aesthetic, creating a warm yet mature environment for all.
